A “due diligence” check you can do is look up the domain name – Do an Internet search for “domain whois” to find a tool.

You will find that johnlewistrade.com has a creation date of 2020-06-06T08:28:39Z Less than 3 months old should ring the alarm bell. That is all we can really say about your case as we do not know any details about yourself, e.g. are you likely to get Emails from john Lewis?

Our Email above says “Your company was among does shortlisted by our team”. Bad spelling/grammar aside, we would very much doubt that we would be on a short list without realising we were tendering our produce to John Lewis. That is not how the tendering process works.

They then ask for our catalogue – It is now obvious they do not know what we sell – If this were real, they would be asking about a specific product – This Email is too generic to be trustworthy.

It is easy for us because we also know that the Email address this arrived at is one of our honeypots – an Email address that has never been used, has no association with any company or products and this particular honeypot has a silly name – obviously we cannot reveal that but its along the lines of [email protected].
